Purpose:
The purpose of a sabbatical is to provide long-term staff members with extended time for rest, spiritual renewal, study, and personal development. This time away is intended to refresh the individual for sustained ministry effectiveness and longevity.
Eligibility:
Full-time pastoral staff are eligible for a sabbatical after every seven consecutive years of full-time service at the church / denomination. Sabbaticals must be approved by the Lead Pastor and/or Elder Board.
Length of Sabbatical:
Eligible staff may take a sabbatical of up to 8 weeks (including Sundays) during the approved sabbatical period. This time is fully paid and does not count against vacation or sick leave.
Sabbatical Components:
A sabbatical should include:
- Rest and Renewal – intentional time for physical, emotional, and spiritual refreshment.
- Study and Learning – this may include reading, attending a course or conference, or focused time on a specific area of ministry development.
- Personal Reflection and Prayer – space for deepening one’s relationship with God and gaining fresh vision for ministry.
- Family Investment – time with family is encouraged to strengthen personal and spiritual foundations.
Planning and Approval:
A Sabbatical Proposal must be submitted at least three months in advance and include:
- Purpose and goals of the sabbatical
- A general schedule or outline of activities
- Any travel or study plans
- How responsibilities will be delegated or covered
- Budget (if requesting funds for courses, materials, or travel)
Follow-Up:
Upon return, the staff member will provide a written summary and reflection report within 30 days. This may include:
- Key learnings and insights
- Impact of the sabbatical personally and professionally
- Vision or direction for ministry moving forward
The staff member may also be asked to share highlights with church leadership or staff.
Additional Notes:
- Sabbaticals are not cumulative and must be taken within a year of eligibility unless delayed for ministry reasons.
- Staff must commit to remaining at the church for at least one year following the sabbatical or may be asked to reimburse a portion of expenses.
