Nut-Aware Policy

[Church Name]

Effective Date: February 1, 2018

1. Summary

At [Church Name], we are fully committed to ensuring a safe environment for individuals with food allergies, including those at risk of severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. Our Nut-Aware Policy is designed to raise awareness, prevent exposure to nut products, and provide a prompt response to allergic reactions.

2. Prevention

  • Nut-Free Practices:
Since nut products are a major cause of severe allergic reactions, we strive to minimize potential exposure by using only peanut-free and nut-free products wherever possible.
  • Staff and Volunteer Guidelines:
All staff and volunteer leaders are asked to refrain from bringing any nuts or products containing nuts onto church property. If such products are consumed off-site, individuals should wash their hands thoroughly afterward.

3. Awareness

  • Training Programs:
  • Staff Training: Annual training sessions will be provided by our health and safety team to help staff recognize and respond to severe allergic reactions.
  • Volunteer Training: Volunteers will receive training as part of our “Plan to Protect” program.
  • Video Resources: Employees and volunteers are encouraged to review video training materials, such as:
  • Event Signage:
For events where food is served, a notice will be posted stating:
“[Church Name] is a nut-aware facility; however, we cannot guarantee that products have not been cross-contaminated or may contain trace amounts of nuts.”

4. Management

  • Individual Allergy Management:
We are committed to working with individuals and their caregivers (if applicable) to manage their allergies while on our premises.
  • For Children: Parents or guardians are required to complete a medical form during child registration that details any known allergies. A copy of this form will be stored in accessible locations and included with the child’s check-in information.
  • For Staff: All employees must complete a medical form indicating any known allergies. A copy of this record will be maintained in the employee file and shared with the health and safety team.

5. Response

  • Emergency Preparedness:
EpiPens will be kept in the same room where individuals with known nut allergies are present and will be administered in accordance with our “Plan to Protect” procedures.
  • Immediate Action:
In the event of an allergic reaction, trained staff will follow established emergency protocols to provide prompt assistance.

For any questions regarding this policy or further information on managing allergies on our premises, please contact our Health and Safety Team.
